I did some watering this morning. That strip of lawn around our patio. This year, somehow, this little strip of lawn has broadened to a good couple of yards of grass. In past years, the strip was not even a yard broad. I have no idea to what we owe this increased fecundity of good, weed-free grass, but I would hate to lose that nice bit of green without putting up a fight to keep it against the ravages of our summer, or at least putting in a show of support.

Matthew Dowd said, "If you are an American, you don't have to believe in God, but you must believe in good. The good of each of us, and in the common good."
Bill Kristol said, "I'm not sure what 'believe in good' means. I'd settle for a commitment to natural rights and to government by consent of the governed."
Well, 'natural rights' is a bit of a tricky concept itself. I suspect, for Kristol (as well as Dowd and just about the whole American middle and upper classes), that entails the right to be wealthy over the labor of others.

Jeet Heer said, "I thought they'd never top the 'who says colluding with a hostile foreign power is a wrong' line."
This is in response to Fox journalist Gregg Jarrett, who said, "Even if somebody does suffer from a mental illness, that doesn't invoke the 25th amendment."
That's what I call unconditional love.

I forgot about the firecrackers. I no longer naturally associate the fourth of July with fireworks, unlike New Year's eve. I guess I am lucky that somebody decided to pop off a few early, prompting me to get Sammy in the house. Fortunately, Sammy came in right away, and Ash was already spending the day with me. Ash spends most days outside with Sammy, but, this summer, so far, every once in a while she will come inside and stay with me.
