A new twist in the daily routine. I have taken my chess board out to play Chernev's selected games on it. I had noticed that one of the reasons why I was giving less of my time to chess was because it was a bad strain on my eyes to be doing as much as I was on the computer - the problem with back-lit screens, I guess. I figured it might be nice to take one activity offline, and it would be nice to play chess in 3-D with a real board and real pieces, the way the game was meant to be. Of course, this means that I don't have the chess engine to crunch out endless, lovely variations, but when it comes to playing out games from books, with their annotations and commentary, I don't really need to churn out variations. I find that it is easier to play throughout the day, playing two or three moves during a reading break, and my eyes do not feel like they are taking a beating. I am really loving it. The idea had been with me for some time, simmering in the back of my mind, and I am glad that I finally acted on it. I feel like it makes my day a lot better, as well as strengthen my bond to chess.
