Things have gotten a little more interesting with Belle. She has started hanging out at the patio now, at least in the evening when it is dark. Sometimes, I just stare at her from the kitchen and she stares back. Sadly, since I no longer take the plate to the patio, there is never any food for her to swipe, and this is one stray cat that I wouldn't mind feeding, as I have to think, looking at that ridiculous bell tied around her neck, that she is fixed, spayed, not a breeding machine.
I am afraid that Belle's story might be sadder than I originally thought. She must have been a house cat, but I suspect that she has somehow become disconnected to her human family, whether she got lost, perhaps in a storm, or the family simply moved and decided they could not bring the cat along with them. There is this extra twist of heartbreak in the proposition that she is chained to that bell, which presumably means that her ability to feed herself is seriously compromised, as she is perhaps reduced to ferreting bugs out of the ground.
