Speaking of tattoos, it appears that Miley got a new one, another of those text jobs on her left lower-arm:

It reads:

"so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat"

I am sure that I will never understand this fashion. Though, it does make me wonder if I were going to indelibly imprint my body with a quote, rather than simply content myself with burying my blog in such quotes, which would I select that would last forever? The closest thing that comes to mind are the names and dates of those I have loved and lost, including pets, though I'm afraid the number of cats may be too much.

“I do enjoy writing, yes. A great deal. And I feel somewhat at a loss, aimless and foolishly sentimental, and disconnected, when I’ve finished one work and haven’t yet become absorbed in another. All of us who write, work out of a conviction that we are participating in some sort of communal activity. Whether my role is writing, or reading and responding, might not be very important. I take seriously Flaubert’s statement that we must love one another in our art as the mystics love one another in God. By honoring one another’s creation we honor something that deeply connects us all, and goes beyond us.”

-- Joyce Carol Oates

I suspect that at least some writers have a more purely mercenary motive for their writing, but I appreciate the thought, and I like to think that my book-blogging is my own way of spiritually communing with the literary world - a little something for my hungry soul, humoring that need for a sense of meaningfulness and significance, in a life that seems more obviously pointless by the year.
