Every argument can only be constructive, if the two sides agree on being objective and, try to avoid fallacies. In most cases though, people are not charitable and, use fallacies willingly. In these cases, they are not really engaging in an argument but merely, a personal dispute with you. Therefore, the only thing I would suggest is to avoid them.

“Attempting to debate with a person who has abandoned reason is like giving medicine to the dead.”

-- Thomas Paine

A nice proposition. However, there often comes a point, and often quickly, when both sides reach what we might call a moral impasse, that is, they argue from different 'first assumptions'. The clearest example is where a question depends on the existence of God. One side believes it, and the other does not. And if you do not readily agree to disagree and move on, then an argument is likely to degenerate.

The Trayvon Martin case continues to boil. As there seems to be some evidence that Zimmerman suffered some injury, it looks like the authorities may have to leave him be, thanks to their "Stand Your Ground" law, favoring the shooter and his perceptions. Given the media and the widespread acceptance that Zimmerman is guilty of murdering the black teenager in cold blood, the situation on the streets may be volatile. And now more firepower is being put in place.

Neo-Nazis are currently conducting heavily armed patrols in and around Sanford, Florida and are "prepared" for violence in the case of a race riot. The patrols are to protect "white citizens in the area who are concerned for their safety" in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting last month, says Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement. "We are not advocating any type of violence or attacks on anybody, but we are prepared for it," he says. "We are not the type of white people who are going to be walked all over."

Orwell closes the chapter with Winston and Julia having a frank, tender discussion about the likelihood of being caught by the Party. Although they understand that their affair is doomed, they take emotional refuge in the idea that, whatever else the Party may do to them, they cannot get them to give up their inner-feelings of love for each other, that they possess this inner-kernel of essential humanity that no torture or drugs can reach. Or so they fancy.

He thought for a little while. 'Has it ever occurred to you,' he said, 'that the best thing for us to do would be simply to walk out of here before it's too late, and never see each other again?'

'Yes, dear, it has occurred to me, several times. But I'm not going to do it, all the same.'

'We've been lucky,' he said 'but it can't last much longer. You're young. You look normal and innocent. If you keep clear of people like me, you might stay alive for another fifty years.'
