Closing up windows and doors for the a/c, I stick my head out the kitchen door and I see that both Ash and Sammy are here, lying against the side of the house. I’m not going to bother with trying to bring them inside, if they need to be out there so bad. I don’t want to chase Ash away from the yard, which is at least safe for the cats.

However, as I’m sliding the door shut, I see the little water bowl, and I should freshen it, but I think, “To hell with it. If they hate coming inside the house so much, where luxury awaits them, they can make do with that icky water. I’m kinda down on them.

Coco just makes it into the big room, going behind the big TV to doze. I love that. Alas, I don’t think it is for my company as much as it is she has some sense in her feline skull, unlike the the others.

100 degrees. Still. Like it will never leave.

After dousing the elephant ears, I check on Ash and Sammy, but they seem to be dozing more comfortably in that heat than they do in this relative paradise of central air. I don’t think I can appreciate that. Maybe it’s best that I stop feeling so attached to them. I think cats usually come to a bad end, at least the ones that run around outside. Such has been my experience. Then again, Willy never came inside and he still busted up my heart totally when he came to his own horrible end.

After getting out from behind the big TV and stretching and getting a good bite to eat, Coco cries to be let out, and even though it’s not quite five and it is still 98 degrees, I oblige. I have this doleful feeling that I just cannot hold them. They are not true pets but half-wild acquaintances.

Wow, Paul Krugman comes out strong with a provocative stand on 9/11. It strikes me as a risky move considering the tendency of the media to marginalize him as sort of left-wing political hack. But Krugman is primarily an intellectual and he shoots for truth, and the political consequences be damned.

_ _ _

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

Congratulations go out to Shannyn Sossamon! The actress, 32, and mom to eight-year-old Audio Science, is expecting her second child. According to National Photo Group, Shannyn is due in December, but the father of the child is still unknown.

In 2002, at only 23, Shannyn got pregnant, with then boyfriend Dallas Clayton, at a very important time in her career. And although she admitted pregnancy slowed her progress in Hollywood, she says she never considered not having the baby.

“I wasn’t ready to be a mom, but if you have any desire to be a better person, having a baby kicks it right into gear,” the 40 Days and 40 Nights star tells the Daily Mail. “Now I’m a better actress and a better mother.”

Man, that is super, super pregnant. I vaguely remeber a news item about the name Audio Science, but the story didn't stick with me. I guess this is why we have not been seeing her in the movies, which I sort of regretted because she struck me as hot enough.

One of the reasons why this news item caught my eye is that I know Ivanna likes her a lot, but it seems that this fair lady has left LJ Land for good, just as I was getting this ready to post. Well, that's my e-life.
