The Scab

I wish I could sneak a peak just a month ahead in time, only to see what this scab on the back of my right wrist will look like. Tomorrow will mark a full week since I burned myself on the lawn mower, and although I’m not terribly anxious about this crusty, alien growth, as though I might lose my hand because of an unchecked infection, I am feeling a little spooked by it.

From the first, when I whipped my hand away from the scalding mower, and as I ran cool water over the burn at the kitchen sink, I was concerned that this wound might be a little too broad and deep to let it take care of itself. However, short of a broken bone, a stabbing, or a gunshot wound, it is better for me to play the he-man and just tough my way through these things.

I have suffered my share of cuts over these years, but they have been small and shallow - just apply a little pressure and they close right up. But I now appreciate that scabs are a different ballgame. I have to go back to my early boyhood to recall when I last had scabs, and I doubt I have had any since I was ten years old. And, yeah, this reptilian growth freaks me out a bit, this dark, hard, scaly shell that now sits in place of skin, almost the size of a quarter.

Happily, I have now googled my way to a greater level of self-assurance, and I may find some consolation that my body, even at this late date, is still remarkably resilient and self-healing, though, lord knows, I have not done much to help keep up this strength and facility, as my body has every right to just give up on me and let me suffer my due, but there is yet some grace in this world.
