The Madness of King Lear
Mar. 10th, 2010 04:13 pmSusanna has expressed surprise that Lear is not one of my top favorites. I shared with her, albeit obliquely, that the play perhaps strikes too close to home, and as we now study Lear's failing struggle with madness, I see how too true it is that Lear is much too personal for me to simply enjoy. Of course, I was never a king, but I was on a much more royal road than this field of weeds I live on.
O, let me not be mad, not mad, sweet heaven!
Keep me in temper; I would not be mad!
Keep me in temper; I would not be mad!
