The Clintons once more wriggled out of a tight spot at the last minute. Bill churlishly dismissed the Obama phenom as “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen,” but for the last few days, it was Hillary who seemed in danger of being Cinderella. She became emotional because she feared that she had reached her political midnight, when she would suddenly revert to the school girl with geeky glasses and frizzy hair, smart but not the favorite. All those years in the shadow of one Natural, only to face the prospect of being eclipsed by another Natural?

-- Maureen Dowd for The New York Times

Writers' strike or not, this show goes on.

Good! I'm enjoying it, and the country needs more presidential debate.

A friend was discussing the Democratic contest between Hillary and Obama, focusing on which qualities are preferable in a president: being cold and astute (like Hillary), or else being nice and decent (like Obama)?

Monk said, "Skill and killer instinct. I think you need that in a president. 'Nice' may be good for a city mayor or even a congressional representative, but not for commander and chief of the American armed forces."

"H'mm. But how often does one really need to kill?" she asked.

Monk said, "Few people have more blood on their hands than an American president."
