I woke up before six-thirty. Returning to normal?

It's a good thing, too. Bo was eager to go outside. At least as eager as the poor old boy can be. I ache watching him slowly get up. You can almost hear the bones cracking.

************

I forgot to mention yesterday that I saw a tiny, scrawny baby birdie in the nest. Another round of hatchlings. The porch is going to get shitty again and need hosing down everyday.

I am impressed with how much shit (literally) that I have to deal with. But I guess that is life. It's very essence.

************

I almost never hear anything good about MicroSuck (I'm going to adopt this name). I marvel how Gates and them are sort of the gods of the Internet. They seem so clueless about computers and programming.

A friend was having trouble with the new Windows Vista and dealing with MicroSuck. Headaches are their greatest product, I think.

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 6 — In the past two years, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota twice vetoed legislation to raise the state’s gas tax to pay for transportation needs.

Now, with at least five people dead in the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge here, Mr. Pawlenty, a Republican, appears to have had a change of heart.

-- SUSAN SAULNY and JENNIFER STEINHAUER for The New York Times

*sardonic chuckle* Well, at least the sky doesn't have to fall on a Republican's head to appreciate that sometimes government has to do something besides fouling up the mail and losing wars. Falling bridges can be enough.

DEARBORN, Mich. — When pools of water began accumulating on the floor in some restrooms at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and the sinks pulling away from the walls, the problem was easy to pinpoint. On this campus, more than 10 percent of the students are Muslims, and as part of ritual ablutions required before their five-times-a-day prayers, some were washing their feet in the sinks.

The solution seemed straightforward. After discussions with the Muslim Students’ Association, the university announced that it would install $25,000 foot-washing stations in several restrooms.

-- Tamar Lewin for The New York Times

When I first read this article on Islamic accommodaton, I admit my first gut reaction was one of anger, to see an Islamicization of society while engaged in a conflict with radicals who want to Islamicize society. However, I suppose America is still rich enough that we can afford such accommodaton, and it should show that we really aren't anti-Muslims.

We just don't want to become Muslims. After all, it continues to be a struggle to keep from being forced to be Christians.

This is a powerful clip on the Iraq war that is perhaps making the LJ rounds. It plays like a real tragedy and is like a sharp punch to the guts.
