Eve

Eve is another of those massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), as I guess they call them now. In response to alarms and concerns of cheating on the part of those who run the game, Eve is going democratic:

The kingdom is in crisis. After pledging to treat its citizens equally, the government stands accused of unfairly favoring one powerful, well-connected political faction. Many citizens have taken to open dissent, even revolt, and some are threatening to emigrate permanently.

This specter of corruption has emerged most recently not in some post-colonial trouble spot but in the virtual nation of an Internet game called Eve Online (population 200,000) where aspiring star pilots fight over thousands of solar systems in a vast science-fiction universe every day.
And you thought LJ has its drama.

"I want to thank the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and staff of the Century Regional Detention Center for treating me fairly and professionally. I am going to serve the remaining 40 days of my sentence. I have learned a great deal from this ordeal and hope that others have learned from my mistakes."

-- Paris Hilton

I never would have guessed that a babe like Paris would have such balls. Well, I guess she was reading a prepared statement. The beauty of being Paris is that you don't even have to think for yourself but have others do that for you.

Paris was released from her 40-day sentence in jail after only a few days, to serve the remainder of her sentence in her mansion. The rationale is that she has a medical condition. I didn't hear details about that, but I suppose she is allergic to jail. The poor really are more made for it than the rich.

You don't think it's fair? Hey, life is for the beautiful and the strong. And it's not like she killed anyone. I still think it's a testament to American idealism that somebody like Paris can see a day in jail.

That's life, baby! Fast and dirty.
