Dogs and Porn
Jan. 5th, 2007 07:46 am♠
It looks like Little Bear has picked up Monk's interest in porn, because he is the only one watching it. He is lying on the bed staring straight ahead at it, blocking Monk's space where he would lie down to enjoy it. But Monk has other things to do anyway, and less masturbation has to be a good thing.

The Shadow Behind Saddam's Death
Jan. 5th, 2007 01:04 pm♠
We have heard a lot of strong criticism over the execution of Saddam, not with the justice of his death, but with the way it was carried out. Mr. Krauthammer writes the best case for this miscarriage in process, as far as my tastes are concerned. He also finds in this failing of the Maliki government another reason why Americans should not be sacrificing more for this regime.

Bill Gates: Would-Be Visionary
Jan. 5th, 2007 04:12 pm♠
Apparently Bill Gates is seeking to get on the ground floor of the Isaac Asimov world of tomorrow in which we have armies of robots at our service, setting up special teams to work on developing the technology to make that possible.
I would be happy if Mr. Gates would set up special teams to keep Internet Explorer and other Microsoft software working and safe. Microsoft has never really seemed all that masterful at programming and other functions at this level of the industry. Winning ownership and securing market share is another matter.

A Little Amazon Goodness

Those slender volumes came early. It is always fun to get new stuff - the great power of consumerism. However, Monk was disappointed looking at Norman Brown's translation of Hesiod's "Theogony." The book does not look much better than what he could have had if he just printed out an edition that is freely available on the Internet. Indeed, the structure is more cramped and difficult to read. I am also doubtful that it is a better translation.
Monk more eagerly thumbed through the beginning of Pauline Reage's "Return to the Chateau," looking for that promised rape scene. He did not find it, but it does look like they are going to break in little Natalie pretty good. Indeed, Monk is so eager to get to the authentic continuation of the story of O that he regrets having more than half of "Frankenstein" to get through. But he should always have problems like this.

Playing Around with the Legend

I am not sure I like this. But it was bound to happen. They are not happy at the all-Elvis radio station to stick to the canon. Now they are doing a lot of strange new re-mixes, playing with the stock. They want new stuff, I guess. I wonder how it plays with most of the fans. I am content with the original goods!
