Rape: A Love Story

At least reading life has been good to me. I just finished Joyce Carol Oates's Rape: A Love Story, a nice one-day read, a fast morality tale of crime and revenge. Think Death Wish with a dash of unrequited love.
Naturally, Monk was hoping for something a little sensationalistic, something a bit prurient. But there is only the merest taste of that dark sexuality, a few sallets in the text for we hungrier souls, nothing that should put off any gentle reader. Ms. Oates is a serious writer, and she does like to delve into the dark waters, but it is literature in her sympathetic and compassionate hands.
At first, I was worried about the book, because she really runs with the sentence fragments, and one is afraid that in a bid to be artsy, she is giving way to laziness. The worry was pointless. The wit is deft and brilliant, and she is gifted in bringing out the softer feelings against the brutal background, so that, by the time we finish the book, we find that we did get a touching love story.
