The Mystery of Harriet Miers

"It's not as bad as Caligula putting his horse in the Senate."
-- Richard Brookhiser
That has to be the best line on President Bush's nomination of devotee Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. After the Roberts pick, this move was a shocker - for everyone. Seeing the presidential announcement on TV, Monk was first stunned that she was an old woman - sixty instead of forty-something - which was in itself encouraging.
Upon learning that Ms. Miers has no judicial experience, Monk first suspected that this was Bush's attempt to sneak in a true believer and hard Right-Winger. He was then relieved to learn that the evolving wisdom was simpler, and that Bush may be giving in a little by picking an old moderate. Maybe it was too wooly headed to think that Bush or anyone could play such a fast one, but one is still not without some serious misgivings, and the woman is known to be an evangel. But it has been reassuring to see that the conservatives are the ones who are more up in arms over this one.
