Mother's Trees
Aug. 3rd, 2003 09:11 amI had a dream that recalls the spring before Teri killed herself, when she practically peppered the back yard with baby trees. I eventually got her down to four trees, of which only one remains, a plum tree.
In the dream, the idea of her peppering the lawn with trees becomes more literal. There are so many of these small baby trees, maybe dozens of them. It wouldn't be an easy matter to simply walk across the yard.
When I go out and discover all these new trees, Teri is there, and I give my familiar, almost feminine whine of helpless exasperation, "Whyyyy, mother!?"
She tells me to wait, and she goes inside the house and flips a switch. She has decorated the trees with Christmas lights, and I am awed by the breathtakingly beautiful display of bright lights that are strung throughout all the little trees.
