Pop says, breathing heavily, "I'm wore out already." He is getting ready to leave for a couple of days at Kay's. I tell him, "You always pack up like you are going away for a month instead of a couple of days." But that's the way he is.

I am still amazed by his social life, and I think again about how he is definitely happier this way than he would have been if mother were still here. And I realize that this is true for me, too. It's difficult to say how much of this was due to unmanageable mental health problems on her part. Part of the problem, certainly, is that she just didn't really like us. We weren't real men in her eyes. She thought Jack was a real man. I heard her say it enough. But maybe a lot of that was her illness. And maybe she was just that stupid.
