"Knock, knock!"

I know I've been a little ... aloof again.

"Well, give us something! How's the weather?"

Heh, actually, it's expected to storm tonight. I already have the cats inside on lockdown.

A little more interesting, perhaps, I got my Jesus book today.

"Jesus book? Don't tell me you're getting religion again!"

No, no. I don't think you have to worry about that.

It started when I was thinking about what cards to buy. I was thinking about the Jesus cards. And I was thinking, 'Oh, why not just read some damn books!'

Then I remembered, going back to my midlife crisis, when I was flirting hard with Christianity, that the old pope, Benedict, had written some books on Jesus that I was interested in but never got around to, as my Jesus mania faded out.

I got it now, the one that covers Jesus's life from his baptism to the transfiguration. I skipped over the infancy narrative, wanting to get to the hot stuff right away.

"Did you dig out your rosary beads, too?"

No! I'm reading Jesus as literature. Only. I suppose I have been about as fascinated with him as I have been with Plato. So, why not? It does lend some nice variety to my reading life. The material has its own logic and music.

"Sure, that's because you are given to thinking it might be real."

Oh, I don't think that's it. I mean, in all fairness, there might be something to that, but very little, just a slight frisson - something to help make the reading more interesting. But that's all. I don't believe anyone is getting saved.
