Kay is in. And I am already enjoying a little break: they are going shopping.

"Break out the porn!"

I could. It is a Shower Day, and I am finished with the grocery list. But I'm really not in the mood.

However, it might be a good time to check my finances and place that order for the Wallace book and those black-back Bicycle cards.

* * *

Oooh, I sort of stretched myself. I will have to dig deep into my roll of quarters to make the bill if it comes a little quicker than I'd like, which it probably will do. But it is for the 4-pack of cards, which comes under Prime and will be delivered this Saturday. I had to go for it.

"Carpe diem, right?"

Is there any other way to live?

Big Brother

There is some reporting that the CIA might be able to use Samsung Smart-TVs to spy on us, even when the TV is off. Which happens to be the TV in front of me now.

Ann Coulter tweets, 'After latest Wikileaks dump, Yakov Smirnoff had to change joke to "In America TV watches you."'

That is pretty good. Her heart may not be in the right place, but she does have a wit about her.

Liberalism

We have a 1970 quotation from Kevin Phillips that highlights the weakness of contemporary Democratic liberalism:

Liberalism has turned away from the common people and become institutionalized into an establishment. Its spokesmen are driven around in limousines and supported by rich foundations, the television networks and publishing houses, the knowledge industry, the billion‐dollar universities and the urban consulting firms which profiteer from poverty. Liberalism is dominant only in the Northeast, which is always the last bastion of a dying order of privilege. The Northeast resists the populist surge of our day just as it fought the revolution of Jefferson, Jackson, Bryan and Roosevelt.

But what's the takeaway?

"I know. Stop supporting colored people, stop teaching evolution, put prayer in school, and give poor and working whites more stuff?

Ah, the magnificence of majoritarian democracy!

"And how would that be different from Trump?"

I guess it could at least be more rational, less Russian, and a little less cruel. But, yeah, I'm not seeing a silver lining anywhere. I guess it was always silly to expect a lot from white people. They are the big ape, and they will naturally take care of themselves.

Apparently, sexual harassment is a particularly big issue in the Marines. Here is one of their fun little routines: 'The drill instructors for the female recruits made them chant embarrassing cadences such as “Prance like a pony!” while half-stepping their formation past us, to humiliate them.'

"Hmph, sound like something you might like."

I can imagine the second line: "Prance like a pony! Swing your sweet tail!"

"See, maybe you should join."

Nah, I'd hardly be much more than another woman to them. But I appreciate the thought.

Chicken

Damn it! Damn it!

"What's the matter now?"

I forgot to set the timer again on the chicken.

"LOL Hardly the end of the world. So, you'll have to guess a little. No biggie."

But it is chicken and I'm not going to screw around with it. I'll just start over. At least it was only one piece.

"Little peculiar, little peculiar."

I know. This is where I am in life. It's both genes and nurture, I guess.

Things were going so swimmingly, too. I'm cooking my chicken while they are out, so that I'll be prepared for a fast dinner tonight while they are here. That's what kicked up the frustration level. Though, I should still be fine on that front.

Debts

Oh, shit.

"A letter. Is that not happiness?"

Please. I think this is real. The student loan people. It's been a long time since I've got anything from them. Maybe a couple of years? A long time.

In the Trump era, I'm afraid they might be getting more serious.

"There's only way to find out."

Or I could just throw it away and save myself the stress.

"Open it!"

Okay, but one more round of Canfield to settle my nerves.

A little over 86 grand.

There's no clear word of tougher action, but we will have to see. I am not optimistic about 2017.

"When are you ever optimistic?"

When have I ever had reason to be. But I feel only worse now. Like no good can come from this.

It freaked me out when they started jailing people. It was newsworthy, but there was no real big backlash: hey, that's not right! And now, with Trump, there is just this sense that there are no longer any limits of decency. It's whatever Power wants. And there's nothing you can do about it.

I need to do less Canfield and do more grocery list.

"I thought you had that done already."

It's worked out. But I have to set it up in the word processor. It's a gimme, but it takes some time.

"I see you got out your designer Alchemy deck."

Yeah, since Canfield is a more intimate game, taking up a smaller space, I thought I could overcome the greater visual challenge that these cards impose on we weak-sighted ones, and I think I can make it work.

It's a beautiful deck, and I am glad to use these cards. It will only be for Canfield, though.

Remember, one of the drawbacks is that I cannot shuffle them in the way I like to do, but I have enough Riderbacks to shuffle to my heart's content.
