Another gray, dry wintry morning. I am coming to prefer it over the drizzly wintry weather on account of the cats. Cats and wet weather invoke calculations that must be managed, and the day is that much easier when you don't have to worry about such considerations, not to mention the grief that must be suffered when you refuse to let them go out. When the weather is dry, you can just let them go out at will, and all is peace and quiet. ... ... James Gleick: "Running for president is the new selfie." [Dowd, Year of Voting Dangerously] ... ... Pi says, "You are trying to flick cards?" Yeah. It's harder than it looks. But, then, I make everything look that way. One of the disadvantages of having the house and the day so much to myself is that I feel this profound restlessness. "You can always try that puzzle again." No, I'm not feeling that restless. Just sorting through puzzle pieces is not that fun for me. "So what are you going to do?" Just read harder, I guess. ... ... Reviewing a book on Hitler, Orwell interjects, "Many dictators, it is worth noticing, are failed artists - Henry VIII and Frederick the Great both wrote bad verse, and Napoleon and Mussolini wrote plays which nobody would produce." [Essays, p. 806] Pi says, "Hmm, Monk, maybe this is a career path for you." Ha, alas, it doubtlessly requires more than a want of talent. Besides, it looks like Trump might be taking the position. Being president apparently is not enough for the Donald. ... ... Orwell: "As a politician [Hitler] had three great assets. One was his complete lack of pity, affection, or human ties of any kind. Another was his bottomless belief in himself and contempt for everybody else. And the third was his powerful and impressive voice, which within a few minutes could make any audience forget his Charlie Chaplin-like appearance." [Essays]
